Super Bowl 2016

After last years Super Bowl, many people were left wondering whether or not depressing-informative ads should be placed during the big game. There were quite a few different commercials from 2015 in particular that left people feeling sad.

Here is one example:

Sure this is a good commercial overall, but airing it during such a pumped up event as the Super Bowl left people not only sad but angry. Do you agree that this isn’t the time or place for such ads, or do you think maybe form a marketing perspective that this is the PERFECT time for companies to get their important messages across.

Here are some responses to last years depressing ads:

Supposedly this years ads won’t be demonstrating cyber bullying, domestic abuse, sick dogs, etc.
I think we can all expect plenty of celebrity features this year. There will be at least 33 celebs during the game, not including the half time show or movie trailers. Let's hope the buzz kill is over.

  1. Personally, I think depressing commercials should not be used. I think the average viewer is a lot smarter than companies sometimes give them credit for, so the audience sees what the advertisement is meant to do: be sad/upsetting/depressing to bring about a response or a call to action.

People called BS on these ads. They were talked about for all the wrong reasons.

But then again, maybe companies don't mind or care. Negative attention is still attention, after all.

  2. Im not a fan of the depressing commercials, however from a marketing standpoint I can understand why certain companies chose to use them. The purpose of the commercials during the Super Bowl are to increase brand awareness, and one of the ways of doing this is to create an emotional connection between the consumer and the brand. Why they chose sadness of all emotions is really anyones guess.
