Definitely not American

In America, people get offended very easily while overseas, people are more relaxed and are much more willing to go with the flow, especially in advertising. In this German ad for the German Olympic Sport Federation, the difference between American and foreign advertising is blatantly obvious. If this ad were produced in America, not only would it be highly disrespectful to portray Lincoln in such a way, but it is too forceful for Americans to be comfortable with it. Americans do not like pushy advertising. They like to feel like they are making their own decisions without being told what to do. In Germany, this ad is probably seen as very humorous and intriguing, nothing like an Americans reaction.

Now not all Americans might react in a negative way to this ad. I, for instance, found it hilarious. While yes I can see where it crosses the line of disrespect and being forceful, I think it has a great message and is portrayed in a humorous memorable way, which is exactly what an ad like this wants to succeed. If I were a heavily patriotic American who happens to be struggling with obesity, I could definitely find this advertisement as disrespectful. Overall, this ad not only portrays the difference between American and foreign advertising, but also the difference between personal preference and personal acceptance in advertising as well.

  1. Is this offensive to Americans because it is relevant to our history? Or if an American ad company did a similar idea on another foreign leader, would it generate the same feeling from that country?
