What is smoking causing you to miss out on?

The Dutch tobacco control has launched a new kind of campaign to address the problems associated with smoking. They have come up with the idea to use cigarettes as art to ask the question, what are you giving up to smoke?

These pieces of art are made up of about 7,000 cigarettes, the average amount of cigarettes a tobacco user smokes in a year. The advertisements are taking a different approach on the fight against tobacco use, instead of focusing on the negative health effects these ads are focusing on the negative financial effects smoking has on users. The first piece of artwork featuring the pyramids has a tag line that reads "You can get a round-the-world ticket for the same price." showing users how much money they are wasting on cigarettes and what they could be doing with that money instead such as touring the country on a motorcycle or shopping trips. I personally think this is a more affective approach to get people to stop smoking. Everyone is well aware of the horrible health risks associated with smoking but most people don't think about the amount of money they spend on cigarettes yearly. If health isn't a concern of the tobacco user chances are money is, and with such severe economic problems in the United States I hope we soon adapt the same type of advertisement because I believe it would be very effective in today's economic times.

  1. I think these ads are more effective than the health related ones. Smokers know that smoking is unhealthy but they still do it out of habit and addiction. Showing the financial burden smoking causes and what you could do with that money I think is a much more effective way to get them to stop. Using an ad to the extent that says something like "For all the cigarettes you bought you could have taken your family here (insert exotic place)." This would help show that not only are they hurting their money situation but also their family.
