Netflix's Message for Hollywood

During the season of the Oscars, Netflix has a message for Hollywood directors. The "Make Room" ad is a social announcement claiming that there is a clear lack of deserving women in the film industry. Netflix uses the beloved Uzo Aduba as their spokesperson, going through her message while showing off their popular, female-driven shows, such as "GLOW" and "Orange is the New Black." Showcasing their best variety of female talent shows the academy that equal opportunity in film is possible and calls only for success. It is an emotional and moving video showing talented women, asking for an opportunity to be seen and heard, while avoiding to preach to the public.

  1. This was a very timely and compelling advertisement. In an era of #TimesUp and #MeToo, this ad is judiciously timed. The use of spokesperson Uzo Aduba was very well-chosen and crucial to the message of this ad: that there needs to be room for more women in the world of entertainment, especially Hollywood.

Moving from different spaces and scenes was effective: from the set of "Glow" to "Orange is the New Black" to a recording studio, the commercial hit so many different aspects and elements of the entertainment world. It didn't just apply to movie sets, but to television, radio, music, etc. It hits at the message of making room in every facet of Hollywood.

The audio was very well-chosen. It was light, slow, and fluid. But still connoted a powerful factor, and desire for change. The script was beautifully and powerfully written. "Make room for voices yet to be heard... stories yet to be told" was my favorite line. It hits at the amount of women with stories that deserved to be told.

This was emotionally convincing, powerful, and embodied the change we need and the desire we have for it.
