...came about these drag looks:
Featured drag queens, Alyssa Edwards, Bob the Drag Queen, and Kim Chi, all made statements about being warriors and what drag means to them. Their answers are based in diversity and cultural understanding which the public has been seeing a lot more from Disney as of recently, including the film Coco.
Past productions, between 1940s, to even as late as the 2000's, have called some negative attention to themselves by 'remaining' culturally insensitive. Fantasia, Dumbo, and even Aladdin have been mentioned as utilizing cultural stereotypes in order to progress a story or make the movie more vibrant. So when Disney sponsored these new looks, in a community that still perplexes people who don't usually expose themself to it; this really made a statement to me.
I was so happy that a larger brand like Disney would shed light on this art community, especially in order to promote a film about strength, beauty, and wonder. Disney did a fantastic job in picking their endorsers, and I am excited to see what other ways they will promote films in the future.
Which drag look was your favorite?
