National Geographic: Animal Selfies

Apparently the word of 2013 was the selfie, and the trend of the selfie has extended into the world of advertising. Ever since the massively successful Ellen Oscar's selfie  proved the power of the selfie, the trend has taken off even more. Now National Geographic, a publication best known for having world class photography that is well beyond the parameters of the selfie, are taking advantage of the trend.

This campaign was made by Heads Advertising in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The ads are extremely effective and show a variety of animals taking their own selfies. The ad uses a reference to a popular cultural trend and impressive visuals (these aren't just workers in animal suits) to capture the attention of the viewer. The copy then demonstrates the benefit of the magazine and enhances the humor of the visuals. Here are a few more versions of the ads that were released. Side note: the Koala might be my favorite.

  1. The koala is good but I like the guerilla. He is such a stoic creature, that this image has the most shock value for me. The koala and panda have a little more playfulness in real life so I see those matching close to personality traits. I also like the variety in mirrors. The selfie in the elevator mirror is clever and I can certainly see a few friends gathering around to take a pic together in that spot.
