Coupon Anatomy 101

If you grew up in a household like mine, you know the importance of coupons. My mother was a coupon queen and it sure did pay off! My mother insisted on using coupons because why pay full price when you can get a great deal?

On the business side of things, coupons are an efficient and effective way to promote products and encourage purchases. When creating coupons, it is important to structure coupons so they can be easily interpreted and lead to a sale. When making a coupon, similar to making an ad, the placement of the components of the coupon are crucial. To help ensure the coupon will be used, follow the bellow steps:

      1.     Clear Messaging as it improves readability.
What is the coupon offering? A person should be able to distinguish the overall offering of the coupon, such as “25% off” before all other information on the coupon.

      2.     Call-To-Actions (CTA) that encourage use.
Call-To-Actions include phrases such as “Hurry before it’s gone” or “Don’t wait” to avoid hesitation in taking advantage of the coupon.

      3.     Clear expiration date that boosts faster redemption rates.
Make sure the audience can clearly find the expiration date so that the coupon can be used before it is no longer accepted.

      4.     Include a tracking code for performance monitoring.
Tracking is important to a company because it reveals measurable information that can be used to make future decisions. With coupon tracking, a business can see how many people used the coupon, if it was used in store, or if it is was used online along with other information that will give insight on how to adapt the next coupon to be even more effective

  1. IVY, thank you for this, I'm inspired to coupon now. The section about including a tracking code was also interesting because I don't often notice when or if this is included.
