That Domino’s Time Rock and Roll

For years, Domino’s has created the technology for their digital customers, called the "Domino's Tracker," to track their orders that can be anywhere from 2-6 minutes away. In order to promote this feature, Domino’s went back to the 80s.

According to Domino’s focus group members, most of their responses were that they wanted to see a physical notification on the app to let them know when their pizza delivery is nearby. So, what better way to promote that idea than to combine it with the famous Tom Cruise film, Risky Business?

The ad starts out with actor, singer and dancer, Jordan Fisher deciding that instead of eating freezer food, he orders from Domino’s. While he is waiting for his delivery, he plays the classic tune “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Segar and reenacts all of Tom Cruise’s dance moves. While he’s dancing in nothing but a pink dress shirt and socks, he gets a notification from the Domino's Tracker that his order is close by. So, Fisher gets his act together (by getting dressed), answers the door and appears the delivery guy having Jordan’s order from Domino’s.

When Domino’s was casting their lead actor, they wanted to find a dancer who was recognizable, but not a “well-known celebrity.” Known for his musical roles in FOX’s Grease and Rent Live, his Broadway debut in Hamilton (and now Dear Evan Hansen), the winner of the 25th season of Dancing with the Stars, and actor in his newest film, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, Fisher was the perfect fit for this role.

Like other brands that have gone this route, Domino’s created a memorable advertisement by creating a story that involved an iconic movie scene and their app's delivery feature.

  1. Yet another example of advertising agencies relying on culturally iconic images to sell products. Not to insinuate that there is anything wrong with that strategy. If anything, it makes perfect sense. By latching on to an image with cultural relevance, advertisers can easily capture viewers attention and interest. Watching this reminded me of a Volkswagen commercial that heavily referenced Star Wars.
