Campbell's Real, Real Life

In an effort to reinforce their traditional branding but in a modern way, Campbell's Soup initiated the "Real, Real Life" campaign in late 2015 and continues to build on the campaign today. The campaign is an attempt to depict real families in real situations and to stray away from stereotypes. It even goes so far as to customize each of its ads for the location in which they will be airing by using news reports or weather patterns for the areas to control voiceovers and visuals.

The campaign's "Spidey" commercial features a young child dressed as Spider-Man playing around the house while the child's mothers prepares lunch. When the child removes the Spider-Man mask to eat soup, it is revealed that the child is a girl. Bet you didn't see that one coming. Campbell's challenged the typical stereotype that only boys play superhero games and set the audience up for a surprise ending by putting a girl in this position.

Campbell's also sought to address the evolving nature of society by depicting diverse couples and families. One such ad features a gay couple feeding their son Star Wars soup, each person proclaiming "I am your father" with each spoonful. Another features a lesbian couple sharing a meal together to reinforce Campbell's inclusive attitude and acceptance of societal norms.

These are just some examples of the thought-provoking ads in the "Real, Real Life" campaign. Have you seen any that stand out to you?

  1. These are definitely heart-warming commercials! The company is defying stereotypical family types and personalities. I think it's really important that a company that's "good for the soul" can show that it is accepting of a-typical family structures and relationships, and embrace diversity. As an American company, it is also important for Campbell's to be accepting of diversity, as America's roots tie back to diversity among its people.
